| Cyclone
Nargis struck Myanmar (formerly Burma) on Friday, May 2, with
a maximum sustained wind of 132 miles per hour and a storm
surge of 12 feet. The storm continued to travel east-northeast
through the Rangoon Division. The Burmese government estimates
2.5million people are displaced and at least 1.5million of
these will most likely still need assistance six months from
now. The U.N. says the death toll could pass 100 000, making
this the world's deadliest storm since the 1990s.
Samaritan's Purse has eight staff members on the ground in
Myanmar and has sent a cargo plane of emergency supplies,
including plastic sheeting, water purification systems, clothing
and blankets. The plane which landed in Yangon on Thursday
morning is one of the first flights by a private NGO to be
allowed to enter Myanmar since the cyclone on May 2nd.
