A permanent supply of safe, clean water

Most life-threatening illnesses in developing countries are related to unsafe drinking water.  In fact it’s the second biggest killer of children around the world, after acute chest infections like tuberculosis.

It’s a staggering thought that of the 1.8 million people who die every year from waterborne diseases like cholera, 90% are children under 5 years old. What this says is that a child dies from preventable diseases caused by unclean water and poor sanitation every 20 seconds!

These are depressing statistics. But there is hope for thousands of these children and families as we drill more wells, provide water filters, rain tanks and improved sanitation.

And, if your help arrives before World Water Day on the 22nd of March, you’ll be helping Samaritan’s Purse achieve our goal of providing a permanent supply of safe, clean water to 58,000 people this year alone.

A good example is the BioSand water filter you can provide with your gift of $100, which could prevent a child dying of typhoid… like Chea Kheng’s son

Water filter

Chea Kheng is a village leader with a family of five living in the Kampong Tralach district of South Central Cambodia. He recalls that he and his family…

“…had been drinking unclean water from many sources such as rain-water and the water pond, without boiling. We were faced with health problems such as diarrhoea, typhoid, stomach aches…

Imagine his fear for his entire family when his son fell ill.

“My son got typhoid – and I took him to the hospital.”

It didn’t take the doctor long to tell Chea what was causing the problem.

“The doctor told me that my son got typhoid from unclean water. I asked, ‘What can I do to protect my family?’ He told me that we should drink clean water from boiling or from a water filter.”

Fortunately for Chea and his family, Samaritan’s Purse was already working in his area providing families with BioSand water filters.

“I visited my cousin’s home and saw the water filter that they are using every day. He told me how important it was to his family and told me I should ask for one…”

When people like Chea ask for help, Samaritan’s Purse works hard to provide BioSand water filters, not just for a few people, but for whole villages. This also includes instruction on proper sanitation and access to other sustainable supplies of clean water.

Your gift to help “Turn on the Tap” for thousands more families across poor nations, will help to:

  • Provide safe water to families in rural Cambodia by helping build 65 wells and delivering 2,800 BioSand water filters into people’s homes.
  • Bring safe drinking water and sanitation to the Kwale region of Kenya through BioSand filters, clean rain-water tanks, sanitary latrines and washable water pans.
  • Build a system of pipes stretching 3 kilometres to bring clean, safe water to impoverished families in Vietnam’s northern highlands. This is why your gift today is so important.

You’ll be doing something amazing! You’ll be giving the gift of water to kids who may never have had a drink of clean water in their lives. And it will be a permanent supply of safe, clean water that they and their families can enjoy for the rest of their lives.

Thank you so much for supporting Turn on the Tap!
