Bringing light to Townsville in time of crisis

Dear Friend,

In January, while I was preparing to come to Australia for the 60th anniversary of my father’s Australia Tour, a monsoonal storm inundated the city of Townsville. I preached in Townsville in 1996, and all of us at Samaritan’s Purse were alarmed to hear that 1.9 metres of rain fell, forcing the evacuation of 2,000 homes. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk described it as “a once in 100-year event.”

Just as we respond to disasters around the world, Samaritan’s Purse deployed relief teams to Townsville to help clean up the flood damage, get houses ready for repairs, and minister to the survivors in the Name of Jesus.

Thanks to people like you who prayed for and supported our ministry in Townsville, along with volunteers who came from all over Australia – and even a team from Canada – Samaritan’s Purse has been able to help clean up over 130 flooded homes.

We have recently completed the second phase of our deployment: making homes “rebuild ready”. We identified homes that had internal flood damage and especially those that had been inundated with black water (waste water and sewage). We removed affected gyprock and treated the wooden frames for mould spores so the structure could dry out.
Mould is a problem in all floods in Australia, but especially in hot climates like Townsville. If not treated properly, mould can trigger a number of breathing problems, particularly for children.

One lady named Zury wrote to thank Samaritan’s Purse for helping her parents deal with flood damage, which was not covered by insurance. “You have given us a little ray of light to begin a new day in this very stormy time. I appreciate your empathy, your total respect for my parents’ place even in the state it was, and more than anything your complete compassion with which you carried out the stripping of walls and sanitising of their home. You have given my parents such a boost in morale; for that, I’m forever so grateful.”

As we work with families like this one in the future, we pray that God will give us opportunities to share the hope we have in Jesus Christ. “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

Sincerely,
