Equipping the church to be the light during COVID-19

“There is so much need in the community right now.”

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chacha saw a great need in her local community – individuals and families jobless, hungry and isolated.

As a pastor at Life Anglican Church in Sydney, New South Wales, Chacha felt motivated to pioneer a project with her church that would bring hope and joy to those most affected.

“I was looking for a project myself to do for our community, but we didn’t have the funding or the resource.”

In April, Chacha joined the Samaritan’s Purse church partnership program with a project to provide food hampers to vulnerable people in the Western Sydney region.

Life Anglican Church was one among many churches that Samaritan’s Purse Australia and New Zealand partnered with during the global pandemic.

“As Samaritan’s Purse, we want to work with local churches on the frontline of a disaster,” said Dan Stephens, Disaster Response Manager.

“When a church has a project, we come alongside them to provide resources, strategies and funding to help them implement the project and achieve our common mission of helping people in Jesus’ Name.”

Chacha and her team of volunteers at Life Anglican Church were able to identify those without income and basic necessities in their local area, and deliver food hampers on a weekly basis.

The food hampers included fruit and vegetables, pantry staples and hygiene products.

“It’s a blessing for us to be able to be able to receive help from Samaritan’s Purse. Given the opportunity and the strategy, any church could do this well,” she said.

The role of the church is so important. They know the needs of the community better than anyone, which helps Samaritan’s Purse establish a long-term connection for disaster victims to continue receiving support, even after our teams leave.

By giving to Australian Disaster Relief, you can help churches like Life Anglican continue being the light in their communities.
