Families devastated by bushfires in Victoria

Update: Samaritan’s Purse has sent an assessor to the fire-affected regions at Wye River and Separation Creek to determine how best to respond to the disaster.

Samaritan’s Purse is reaching out to provide assistance to families affected by the devastating bushfires that have destroyed 116 homes on the South Coast Rd in Victoria. At Wye River 98 homes have been lost and at Separation Creek, 18 homes.

Hundreds of firefighters and dozens of tankers and aircraft have been battling the blaze, which was sparked by a lightning strike. At one point on Christmas Day, 18 aircraft were working on the fire which has so far burned more than 2,200 hectares and is not yet under control.

The Great Ocean Road area has been declared a catastrophe and it is unclear when everyone will be able to return to their homes. Thankfully no lives have been lost. Authorities are assessing the scale of the damage thought to be around $38 million.
