Our First School

In January 2007, Samaritan’s Purse Australia/New Zealand formally opened the first school we built, Tom Nub Kor 5 Primary School in Cambodia, positioned very close to the border of Thailand.

It was expected that only 350 students would attend the school, however, on the opening day over 700 students turned up! Many of them had returned from Thailand where they had been labouring in fields and on construction sites. To cater for the needs of the community, Samaritan’s Purse constructed a second, six-classroom building later that year, complete with blackboards, desks, chairs and a latrine block.

Our passion to see kids educated and lifted out of poverty has only increased over time; since 2007 we have funded the construction of 39 schools across Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Fiji and Papua New Guinea so that generations of children in these nations can be taught in a safe environment.

Alongisde this, we are also increasing the quality of education by piloting new programs that train teachers to effectively teach and engage large groups of kids using innovative new resources. We are also pioneering IT based teaching resources for both students and teachers. Thank you for partnering with us over the years to bring the joy of education to children in desperate need.
