A great journey for a teacher of The Greatest Journey – Philippines

Every Friday after finishing her week of work, Ian Ian travels by bus for a few hours, takes a ferry to San Pedro Island, and then another small boat to Hilantagaan Island, a community of only 3,000 people. She stays through Sunday evening and spends her weekend with a group of children on the island, teaching Bible stories and often feeding them meals.

Ian Ian is a teacher for The Greatest Journey, the Samaritan’s Purse discipleship program for children who have received Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts.

“Ian Ian is one of the most engaged and passionate TGJ teachers I have ever seen. Although she has limited resources available to her on this island, she has found creative ways to make the class fun for the children while teaching them about Jesus!” said one local church leader.

Along with two young men, Ian Ian has planted a church and begun to construct a building. As they wait for the finances to finish the church, Ian Ian sleeps in an open-air loft in this structure each weekend. She does not have access to running water or electricity. When asked if she will continue to come to the island each weekend after the children graduate from TGJ, she replied, “I am committed to this community and these children indefinitely.”

She also remarked that if she doesn’t return home Sunday evenings, the children are tempted to skip school to spend time with Ian Ian and her team. We praise God for incredible TGJ teachers who are reaching children, even in the most remote places. God is using Ian Ian and her service to Him to build His kingdom on a tiny island most have never heard of.
