Animals, Agriculture & Livelihoods

For 2.6 billion people in the world, subsistence farming is literally the only way to live. They have to eat what they grow to survive.

Samaritan’s Purse helps people build livelihoods by farming animals and agriculture. As well as feeding their families, they can sell produce and animals to earn income. Farming based livelihoods are a powerful tool that empowers poor families in rural communities to break the cycle of poverty and become self sustaining with hope for the future.

When a family has income, they can do things most of us take for granted. They can send their kids to school, pay for food, clothing and medicine and more. A life free from poverty begins with income. Our livelihoods programs provide both training and resources and have the aim of generating income.

What We Provide

Chickens

Samaritan’s Purse provides needy families with training on chicken health and care and the materials to build a chicken coop. Chickens provide a nutritious food source and a sustainable source of income as participants will be trained on how to market the chickens and eggs for a profit. With this consistent source of income, families can encourage their children to continue their education.

Pigs

Samaritan’s Purse provides pig sties and the training to raise healthy pigs to families in need. This enables a family to have meat to eat and to sell at the markets and they can fertilize a vegetable garden with droppings.

Yaks

Samaritan’s Purse equips families in need with the tools for a productive livelihood – yaks and offspring, training in improved animal husbandry skills and teaching to maximize the potential of their animals. Yaks can be combed for wool, sold for meat or used for transportation and female yaks often supply over 3 litres of milk per day in milking season, providing a valuable source of nutrition and income.

Farm and Garden

Barren land can be transformed into flourishing fields by teaching improved agricultural methods and providing seeds and tools. We provide farmers with drought-tolerant seeds, equipment, and training in rainwater harvesting and irrigation techniques, helping produce bountiful crops so farmers can earn an income and support their family.
